Aluminium Boats

Compared to steel, aluminium though more expensive, weighs about a third as much, and above the waterline requires little protection against the marine environment. Unlike steel, aluminium's toughness increases at lower temperatures and this behaviour adds to its attraction as a material for high latitudes.

Though a highly versatile material for boat building, the longevity of the boat will depend upon,

  • the correct structural design
  • the matching of alloys and components.
  • the design of welded joints
  • correctly specified welding procedures
  • people experienced with the subtleties of aluminium fabrication.
  • the proper design and implementation of electrical systems.

When these aspects are well executed a remarably strong and durable boat will be the outcome. Careful consideration however needs to be given when buying, building, maintaining or modifying an aluminium boat so that the great advantages offered by this material are not compromised by factors which mitigate against its success.
